A turnkey plan, design, and build project this 100,000 square foot facility will be Canadian Food Inspection Agency compliant, and includes a 60-foot-high freezer and cooler spaces, and a multidoor cold dock.
Approached by the multi-national dairy products manufacturer Arla Foods, early in the development process, Coldbox was able to identify a suitable greenfield and subsequent developer for the 100,000-square-foot facility. Proceeding through the planning, design, and permitting phases, the facility is currently commencing construction.
Recognizing Arla’s commitment to environmentally sustainable operations, the Coldbox design-build team was eager to provide sustainable solutions for the new facility. The new facility will include the use of airtight insulated metal panels with maximum thermal resistance, all-in-one vapour and water barrier that plays a critical role in enhancing energy efficiency, low power consumption, LED lighting, smart thrmostats, high-speed doors, and white TPO roofing membrane.
The energy-efficient refrigeration system further reduces power consumption by using the most energy-efficient parts available. This includes scroll compressors, electronically commutated motors, electronic control valves, and programmable logic controls, resulting in a highly efficient system. Free cooling is also used when the outdoor air temperature drops below the setpoint, reducing energy consumption by 90% compared to cooling with the mechanical refrigeration compressors running. By employing the advanced free cooling system, energy savings estimated to be as much as 739,995 kWh when compared to a typical split system. This results in an offset of 43 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
